How to DIY a Modern Board & Batten Accent Wall

Recently, I added this simple modern board & batten accent wall to my primary bedroom and it has made a huge impact. After painting the entire bedroom I was ready to tackle this project head on.

Materials:

1x3x8 (10 total)

1x2x8 (6 total)

Brad Nailer & Nails (I use this one)

Paintable caulk

Wood Putty

Paint

Tools:

Putty knife

Paint Brush

I knew I wanted the accent wall to be bold so I chose to use Cracked Pepper by Behr in a flat finish. I started by painting the wall with two coats of the this paint which provided great coverage.

Step One:

Once the wall was painted, I removed the baseboards that would be replaced with 1x3's . This step can be skipped if you would like keep your existing baseboards. After the baseboards were removed, I replaced them with 1x3's and beveled the edges to better match up with the existing baseboards. I also added 1x3's to the top of my wall and the sides. I added the top and bottom boards first, measured for each side piece and then cut and installed the two side pieces.

Step Two:

Now that I have a border up around the perimeter of my wall, I added the 1x2's that are placed about 1 inch apart from the 1x3's. To get the spacing correct and uniform from top to bottom and throughout the entire wall, I used a 1x2 on its side as a spacer. In total, the total width of the 1x3, space, and 1x2 is 5 inch which is important to note to calculate the spacing of each section.

Step Three:

It's time to calculate the spacing. For my accent wall, I wanted 5 total spaces so I would need another 4, 5in sets totaling 20in. Measure the space in-between both 5in sets on either side of the wall (191.5in in my case) and then subtract the 20in from that number. Now I am working with 171.5in. To figure out my spacing, I took 171.5 and divided with my 5, which is the number of total spaces I want, equaling 34.3 or 34 5/16.

Step Four:

Measure for the next set of vertical boards. I measured each section so my measurements were as precise as possible then cut my boards. Once the boards were cut down to size, I installed the boards using 1x2 on its side as a spacer and a level. Repeat this process for each set of vertical boards.

** From experience, it will be easier to paint the vertical boards before installing. I painted a majority of the boards after I installed them and it was tedious to say the least.

Step Five:

Now that all your boards have been installed, caulk the seams and putty the nail holes. This step will take the longest, trust me, but its also worth the time and attention. This step takes every project from diy to professional. Once the putty has dried, sand it down for a smooth finish.

Step Six:

The final step is to paint your accent wall in the color of your choosing. This modern board and batten looks great in a dark bold color but would also be beautiful in any color!

I hope this step by step process helps you turn a room into something you have always dreamed of.

xx, Jillian
